Before BMW built a venerable M2, it offered the 1M Coupe. Making 335 hp and 270 lb.-ft. of torque, the manual-transmission-only sports coupe could hit 60 mph (100 km/h) in 4.5 seconds. And thanks to the limited-slip differential, brakes, and the suspension components it borrowed from the M3, it was the absolute hoot on the track.
But in the eyes of M purists, the BMW 1M had the problem. Its engine, while plenty powerful, was a same one BMW offered in the clumsily-named Z4 sDrive35is. Heresy!
The BWM 1M in the video below has had that problem” fixed, though. Instead of the stock engine, it uses the genuine M powerplant yanked out of an E60 M5. That means there’s now the V10 hiding under the hood making 550 hp. Cue the drifting. So much drifting.
The first time we saw this vehicle, we were seriously impressed. There’s no telling what kind of black magic went into fitting the V10 into such a small car, but we are definitely on board. Just listen to that S85. It’s incredible. WOW!!! .BMW 1M Coupè 5.0 V10 Engine Swap Destroying the Tires on Track!!
