Meet the Three-pointed Star’s latest in-your-face open-top ride: the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster. The wildest Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach (AMG) blows its top and added a higher-horsepower version. The “roofectomy” actually worked well because the AMG GT was meant from the get go to be a roadster. The muscular rear end complements the long hood and the car’s low profile.
The AMG GT roadster will be available in two variants: a standard GT producing 469 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque; and above that there is a new power and equipment level from AMG, the GT C. The latter is positioned above the GT S but below the GT R variants of the coupe.
With it, Mercedes-AMG is unleashing a further output rating of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, thereby highlighting the exclusive character of the latest model. The car makes makes 557 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque from 1900 to 5750 rpm. The sprint from zero to 62 mph is completed in 3.7 seconds, and this explosive acceleration continues until the top speed of 196 mph is reached.
The GT C adds to the capabilities of the AMG GT coupe by integrating several upgrades that surpass even the GT S coupe, since they have been sourced from the GT R. They include rear-wheel steering, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, revised gearing of the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and an additional Race mode. Expect the GT roadsters to arrive in Mercedes-AMG showrooms in fall as a 2018 model.
