Ok, Toyota simply does not have any luck with racing high-end expensive prototypes at the Le Mans. They lost last time and they lost this year as well. To Porsche, of course. However, Toyota, seemingly, has an edge in a somewhat different type of racing – semi truck racing.

In the video they released a few weeks back, Toyota demonstrates the power of their advanced Fuel Cell Propulsion and compares the acceleration of their Fuel Cell powered truck against the diesel powered truck – both hauling a full load with a total on road weight of 35,000 lbs.

Toyota Project Portal Hydrogen Truck benefits from electric motors giving out full torque from the get go and operating with only one gear. Considering that diesel powered machines have to work their way out to the optimum torque and change a whole lot of gears in the process (up to 18), the advantages of Fuel Cell Powered trucks are obvious.

And they are even more obvious after you watch this short video where Project Portal Hydrogen Truck surges ahead like a sports car leaving the Diesel truck in the dust.

More about the Toyota Project Portal Hydrogen Truck:

“Toyota revealed “Project Portal” – a hydrogen fuel cell system designed for heavy duty truck use at the Port of Los Angeles. The zero-emission truck proof of concept will take part in a feasibility study examining the potential of fuel cell technology in heavy duty applications.

The Project Portal platform is designed to provide the target performance required to support port drayage operations. The truck generates more than 670 horsepower and 1325 pound-feet of torque (approx. 1800 Nm) from two Mirai fuel cell stacks and a 12kWh battery, a relatively small battery to support class 8 load operations. The concept’s gross combined weight capacity is 80,000 lbs. (36.3 metric ton), and its estimated driving range is more than 200 miles (320 km) per fill, under normal drayage operation.”
